Energy efficiency is key to ensure a safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system for the future. It is the hidden abundance in every energy resource that each country possesses that holds the secret to the quickest, most cost-efficient way of addressing energy security, environmental and economic challenges in the future.
While energy efficiency policies are becoming a key part of the global energy market, there is still a great untapped potential.
On average, people spend 80% of their lives inside buildings – office buildings, schools, hospitals and homes.
Buildings represent a large capital expense for businesses. It’s no surprise that property owners and managers are constantly looking for new ways to make buildings more efficient, sustainable, safer and more comfortable.
There are several different technology options available in the market and sometimes it becomes a daunting task selecting the right solution. Everyone is claiming that they have the best solution to reduce energy consumption and emissions.
Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. Currently, about 35% of the EU’s buildings are over 50 years old. There is thus a significant opportunity to improve the current situation by investing in technology that quickly will have a positive impact on both energy consumption and emissions.
Recently the Global Climate Action Summit released the exponential climate action roadmap highlighting that the Paris agreements goal can be achieved if greenhouse gas emissions peak by 2020, halve by 2030 and then halve again by 2040 and 2050. They conclude that “This is now technologically feasible and economically attractive but the world is not on this path”.
We have identified three main innovation waves for building technology – enabling property managers to have a positive impact on the reduction of greenhouse emissions with a fast return on investment and a sustainable value.
The three waves are:
Wave 1: Automated Buildings
Wave 2: Building Analytics
Wave 3: Building Optimization
